Brooklyn-raised writer/producer Dave Chan joins the Art of Brooklyn to curate new films, series and screenplays for Brooklyn’s flagship independent film event. The 7th Annual AoBFF runs June 7–11, 2017, with submissions open until April 14. Award-winning writer/producer Dave Chan has been named Guest Festival Director for the 7th Annual Art of Brooklyn Film Festival (June 7–11, 2017.) Dave Chan is the founder of Navy Yard Films, a Brooklyn-based independent film production company. An acclaimed screenwriter and producer, his short comedy script “Fly!” is in development as an animated feature that he will produce and direct and his Family Guy spec script has won or placed in almost 25 competitions. Dave is currently writing and producing the crime comedy feature “Sure Fire!”, to be directed by his creative partner Michael Goldburg. Their previous collaboration “What’s Eating Dad?” — a winner and nominee at almost 20 festivals internationally — screened at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival in 2015. Dave also regularly consults for television and movies including the taut action film “Ambushed” starring Vinnie Jones and a TV pilot currently in development at Fox. Brooklyn-raised Chan said, “AoBFF is a wonderfully programmed international festival… I was completely thrilled and honored to be asked to Guest Festival Direct for 2017. I look forward to working with the amazing team at AoBFF to make this year’s festival fun and memorable.” AoBFF Executive Director Joseph Shahadi said, “We are really happy to be working with Dave this year. In 2017 we are hosting our first-ever screenplay competition and it’s a real coup to get such a successful writer and producer to curate the festival this year.” Submissions for 2017, including the screenplay contest, are open on Film Freeway and Withoutabox at aobff.org.
About AoBFF: The Art of Brooklyn Film Festival is the only international, independent festival in the world exclusively devoted to the vibrant Brooklyn indie film and media scene. Since 2011, AoBFF has entertained an average of two thousand guests a year, had a half dozen distribution deals made for our premieres — and an HBO series. We’ve partnered with New York Women in Film and Television, Prime Latino Media, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, NBC Universal, ESPN Films and others. The theatrical cut of Spike Lee’s new film 2 Fists Up premiered at the 2016 AoBFF.
Roger Skai and Thomas Bellezza invited AoB co-founder Anthony DeVito onto Top of the Bottom Pile on BBOX radio. Their show is "a gathering of comedians focused on working together as a team among like-minded individuals to bring laughter, success, and a little fun back into the business side of comedy." As a comedian, Anthony fit right in. And as an entrepreneur he shared some valuable insights on what he's learned in his career as an actor, arts organization co-founder and long-time advertising professional.
They talked comedy, acting, the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival, Brooklyn On Demand and lots more. A silly, loose conversation that has some solid business tips for people who are working and creating independently. Have a listen: Dena Greenbaum's Crazy Country Club doc 'Warm Beer Lousy Food' comes home to Brooklyn On Demand11/12/2015 When you talk about Brooklyn's legendary Crazy Country Club, the phrase "you had to be there" definitely applies. Filmmaker Dena Greenbaum's father Steven worked at the club, and her 2012 documentary is a loving tribute to the long-gone Bay Ridge icon. Warm Beer, Lousy Food is the untold story of America's first comedy club, and its founder (and self-proclaimed nut) Lou Burdo. The film includes rare footage of the club throughout its nearly 50-year history and testimonials from the founder, staff, and patrons, breathing life back into a storied institution that, despite having been shuttered long ago, continues to live on for the many people who were forever changed by this wonderful and crazy place. When asked how she feels about her film streaming free on the only platform for Brooklyn-centric film and media, Dena says, "If I were to answer in the tone of the club I'd say 'WHO GIVES A SH*T!' But, on a more serious note, I'm very excited Warm Beer, Lousy Food is part of Brooklyn on Demand. It's important to share the story of Brooklyn's beloved Crazy Country Club with this audience. I hope it brings laughter and good memories back to Brooklynites who attended the club, and I hope it brings the club to life for younger generations that didn't get to have the firsthand experience." Watch Warm Beer Lousy Food for free online and on Roku. Brooklyn On Demand: Facebook Twitter Website Art of Brooklyn co-founder Anthony DeVito recently came across a Facebook group that posts photos of the (quite large) parts of Kings County that don’t get much attention online.
The Southern Brooklyn Scrapbook never ceases to amaze Anthony (born and raised in Southern Brooklyn himself) with its obscure images and lively discussions, so he got in touch with creator K C van Sandt, who had a lot to say about his enthusiasm for Brooklyn, what counts as 'real' history, and the challenges involved in curating a public group online. Tiny Gran'pa makes it big! Director Will Caballero's groundbreaking series comes to HBO Latino.8/20/2015 First, there was the short film "How You Doin' Boy? Voicemails from Gran'pa" which had its NYC Premiere at the 2014 Art of Brooklyn Film Festival. (And took home the Best Animation award to boot.)
But Gran'pa was too big for just one film, so he became a web series. Now, the world's tiniest abuelo will be doling out advice for two seasons on HBO Latino via a “first of its kind” acquisition deal for interstitial programming between creator William D. Caballero and HBO.
Fred Stoller is a stand-up comedian and actor you’ll instantly recognize. He’s appeared on Late Night With David Letterman and The Tonight Show, and has guest starred on countless sitcoms, establishing himself as TV’s go-to nebbish: most notably as Ray’s mopey cousin Gerard on Everybody Loves Raymond, Elaine’s forgetful date on Seinfeld, and Monica’s bossy co-worker on Friends. He’s appeared in the films Dumb and Dumber, Rebound and Little Man, among others. Fred & Vinnie, the indie feature he wrote and starred in, won the Audience award at The Austin Film Festival.
AoBFF co-founder Anthony DeVito asked Fred about his Brooklyn roots, his two books and his new podcast, ‘The Mild Adventures of Fred Stoller.’ |
